Friends in Christ,
Forgive me the clumsy turn of phrase, but these sunny, warmer days have been just-what-I-didn’t-know-I-
To see, or more importantly, to feel the sun (whether out of doors or through a window, if you cannot get outside) has been such a blessing. In the midst of uncertainty it has felt positively restorative to be rooted in something as elemental as the changing of the seasons; something older than this virus; something bigger than “all this;” something that points to the truth of God’s awesome creative power that was, and is, and is to come. It makes me feel thankful for all of those “little things” that don’t seem quite so little anymore.
Sunshine or not though, I just really miss you all. I miss hearing Holy Scripture together. I miss making a joyful noise with you. I miss sharing the Lord’s Supper with you and I miss fellowshipping under one roof with you. I miss our church life and yearn for its eventual return. …And yet. And yet.
Thanks be to God in Christ, in the face of despair; in the face of anything that doesn’t look like faith, hope, or love; there is always an, “And yet…”
Amidst our yearning, frustration, anger, and unwillingness to simply wait, come the words of our Lord, the Living Word, saying, “Behold, I am with you, even until the end of the age.”
I think about what ‘the end of the age’ looks like and I hear the Most High saying to us; saying to me and to you, “Behold! I am with you! I was here for the Spanish Flu in 1918 and I am here in 2020 for the Corona Virus. I was here before and I will be here after because I am the beginning and the end. This pandemic may be global but my love is bigger. No globe can contain my love for you. I’ve got this. I’ve always had this. I, the Lord your God, am with you.”
Your priest is also with you. Please call me or email me if you need anything: talk, prayer, a blessing, sacramental; you-name-it. I may have a four-year-old using me as a jungle gym during parts of our conversation, but that’s okay. Jesus’ got that too.
In Christ, with my love,
